When three seniors moved into their new off-campus housing in at Ohio State University, they made a strange discovery and found they had a secret housemate in the basement!
According to The Lantern, OSU’s campus newspaper, students leasing a typical fixer-upper home near the school were also unknowingly rooming with “some random guy” squatting in their basement.
The house was huge, and eventually ten of Mark’s friends would occupy the house. But in the beginning, there were just three: Brett, Mark and another, MJ.
The boys woke up one morning to find every door open…. in every room. As well, the dishwasher, the fridge, dryer, washing machine, oven and microwave had all their doors open, The boys joked that it must have been a ghost.
“We had been telling everybody the story of the ghost in our house coming in and opening all our cupboards and the microwave and oven and all this stuff,” Mark stated.
When they heard a series of “weird noises like dings and alarms” coming from downstairs. They decided to investigate.
“We each grabbed a baseball bat, or a knife, and we were going through all the rooms, opening closets. One of us would have the baseball bat ready to jump at anything that came out of the closet.”
They didn’t find anything abnormal, that is until they reached the basement.
There they found a door that they had assumed led to a utility room. It was locked.
“The roommates thought a locked door in the basement led to a utility closet,” Lantern staffer Kathleen Martini confirms. “When maintenance workers knocked the door down, they found a bedroom complete with framed photographs and textbooks.”
The secret bedroom belonged to a young man named Jeremy, who apparently attended OSU. He was not home when the room was discovered. Jeremy was evicted…
“He was a really nice guy,” said legal house resident Brett Mugglin. “I feel bad for him. It’s just, he wasn’t supposed to be living there … It’s funny now, but it potentially could have been extremely dangerous given that some random guy had a key to our house and was just living in our house without anyone knowing.”
The funniest part of the story? Mugglin had actually met Jeremy in the home’s basement previously.
According to Mugglin, they introduced themselves, had a brief conversation and parted company. At the time, Mugglin figured Jeremy was simply visiting friends in another part of the house.
Nope. He was secretly living behind the locked door nearby.
