Senator Al Franken (D-MN) took the Senate floor today and announced that he would resign in the coming weeks over sexual misconduct allegations. He did not apologize or admit guilt. Over thirty of his fellow Democrats had demanded that he step down. “Today I am announcing that in the coming weeks I am resigning as a member of the U.S. Senate,” said Franken. He spoke about the national conversation over sexual assault, where numerous Hollywood celebrities, media executives and government officials have been accused of misdeeds.
“A couple months ago I felt that we had entered an important moment in the history of this country. We finally listened to women. Then the conversation turned to me,” Franken added. He made a point of denying many of the allegations and the ones he couldn’t, he claimed he remembered differently. “I also think that it gave some people the false impression that I did things I have not done,” the Minnesota Democrat charged. “Some things aren’t true, while others I remember very differently.” Eight women have now come forward on Franken. There is photographic and recorded evidence against him on some of the claims.
And here is where we get to see the sacrificial political lamb spell out why the Democrats just threw him under the bus. Franken next went after President Trump and Alabama’s Senatorial candidate Judge Roy Moore. Both have been accused by women… both have denied sexual misconduct. There is no proof that either man has done anything wrong. Sacrificing Franken and Conyers gives the Dems what they believe is the high ground to destroy both Trump and Moore. Franken will be replaced by an even more liberal politician appointed by Governor Dayton (a Marxist) and Conyers was due to retire. His son will take his place… he is a criminal and just as bad as his father.
This is an elaborate political trap. “I am leaving, while a man in the oval office has bragged about his sexual assault on tape,” Franken said of Trump. “While another man who has the full support of his Party,” Franken said, referring to Moore. I have news for the Democrats… it won’t work. Sorry guys, we just aren’t that dumb. At least I hope we aren’t.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) joined over 30 of his fellow Democratic lawmakers calling on Franken to resign yesterday. “I consider Senator Franken a dear friend and greatly respect his accomplishments, but he has a higher obligation to his constituents and the Senate, and he should step down immediately,” Schumer said in a short statement. How very noble… not. Female senators calling for Schumer’s ouster included Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Patty Murray (D-WA), Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO).
Sen. Mazie Hirono defended Franken in the beginning, but eventually called for him to step down. “Today, I am calling on my colleague Al Franken to step aside. I’ve struggled with this decision because he’s been a good Senator and I consider him a friend,” she wrote yesterday. “But that cannot excuse his behavior and his mistreatment of women.”
Yesterday was the final straw for Franken when journalist Tina Dupuy accused him of sexual misconduct in a piece published by the leftist rag, The Atlantic. Dupuy claimed that he groped her in 2009 at a Media Matters party during President Barack Obama’s inauguration. This all started with Leann Tweeden coming forward against him. She’s a journalist who anchors at TalkRadio 790 KABC in Los Angeles, California. Tweeden accused Sen. Franken of fondling her while she slept and shoving his tongue down her throat without her consent on a USO tour to Afghanistan.
Franken released multiple statements apologizing for his inappropriate conduct towards numerous women and asked for a Senate Ethics Committee investigation into his actions. Mitt Romney, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Speaker Paul Ryan and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) all refused to initially call on him to resign. But these establishment Republicans had no qualms whatsoever calling for Alabama Judge Roy Moore to step aside given the unsubstantiated claims of sexual assault against the Alabama Senate Republican candidate.
President Trump responded to Franken’s sexual assault allegations by labeling the disgraced Minnesota Senator “Al Frankenstein.” The 66 year-old Senator, who was a famous comedian and talk show host in his former life, was first elected in 2008. Perhaps he can get his old gig back at Saturday Night Live. He still won’t be funny, but at least it will distract him from acting inappropriately towards women.
