One of my all-time favorite movies was ‘Home Alone’. I still watch it every once in a while as a Christmas movie. It was very funny and just made you feel good. There’s not a lot of movies like that anymore. John Heard played lovable, but forgetful Peter McCallister – Macaulay Culkin’s character’s father – in the Home Alone movies. I’ve seen him on so many shows and I have always liked the guy. I was incredibly saddened to hear that he had passed away at the age of 71 this week. I just can’t fathom it.
Heard was also in ‘The Sopranos’ and that won him an Emmy Award. He starred in dozens of movies and shows like ‘Deceived’, ‘Beaches’, ‘Big,’ ‘Gladiator’, ‘Awakenings’ and ‘The Pelican Brief’. It doesn’t get much more American than John Heard. You might also remember him from ‘Battlestar Galactica’, ‘Miami Vice’ or even the first ‘Sharknado’. He was a world class actor and loved by millions. He was a mega star in the 80s and 90s. Heard had a four-decade career in Hollywood and more than 200 credits on stage and screen.
TMZ is reporting that he was found in a hotel room in Palo Alto, California by the maid service. He was pronounced dead at the scene after the police and coroner arrived and examined him. Heard had minor back surgery this week and was supposedly at the hotel recovering. The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office confirmed his death.
“I can confirm that our officers responded with the fire department to a hotel in our city yesterday on a report of a person in need of medical aid,” a spokesperson from the Palo Alto Police Department told People in a brief statement. “The person was determined to be deceased. While still under investigation, the death is not considered suspicious at this time.” Cause of death at this time has not been released.
Heard had been married three times and was a Washington, DC native. One of his marriages was to Margot Kidder. He has three children, including one with former partner Academy Award-winning actress Melissa Leo. He was also arrested in 1991 for an altercation with Leo where he allegedly slapped her. And he was found guilty in 1997 of trespassing at Leo’s Baltimore home. Sounds like a very troubled relationship.
This is a tragic loss and it makes me very sad to know I will not get to see his talent in new appearances anymore. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace.
