Little Charlie Gard’s case in Britain is now looking up a bit and his parents are more optimistic. First, an American doctor was allowed to fly to Britain to examine the baby. Now, the US Congress has given legal and permanent residence to Charlie, so he can fly here and get treatment. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) tweeted, “We just passed amendment that grants permanent resident status to #CharlieGard and family so Charlie can get the medical treatment he needs.” A number of lawmakers here in the US have been moving heaven and earth to try and save this child and stop the Great Ormand Street doctors from euthanizing the 11 month-old baby.
But it won’t be that simple. The legal system in Britain still has their tentacles around this family. The High Court there doesn’t care what passport the child holds and they are still saying it is illegal for Charlie to fly to America without their permission. This is the true face of socialism. The attorney for Charlie (who was appointed by the government and heads up an assisted suicide group), says it is up to the hospital whether the baby can be transferred. They will also have to get permission from the court. This is just so wrong in so many ways, I have trouble dealing with it.
The court has said though that if the hospital agrees, they would be ‘bound to agree’. If in the end the hospital decides that the parents are causing undo suffering to the child, they can call the police and have the parents arrested under the Powers of Protection legislation. There would be a massive outcry against that, but they could do it. I pray they don’t.
Charlie’s parents have just recently released a new pic of the little boy, where he is looking at a toy. The doctors had claimed he does not know his surroundings because of his condition. This is obviously not true. They also said he was blind. Not so much. The doctors keep insisting that he is blind, deaf, unable to move and badly brain-damaged and believe it is ‘cruel’ to let him live any longer. That is collectivist bull crap. Margaret Sanger would be proud.
The doctors held a crucial summit day before yesterday on the child’s fate and they are still convinced he should be allowed to die. I can’t understand why they are doing this, unless it is a power trip for the government… that they are in control, not the parents or loved ones. The parents have the money and the will to try a new, experimental treatment in the US for Charlie. It has worked on at least two other children. Multiple hospitals here have said they would take the child. A couple of hospitals offered to foot the bill even though the parents have the money for this. The Vatican has also offered to take the child and treat him. But Britain and the EU are determined to kill the poor child. Right in the footsteps of Adolph Hitler.
American neuroscientist Dr. Michio Hirano examined Charlie for over five hours and argued in favor of saving the child. The Brits were not persuaded sadly. What we are seeing here is communism-lite. Dr. Hirano and an expert from the Pope’s hospital in Rome spent five and a half hours trying to talk around Charlie’s doctors and convince them to save his life. Charlie is now set to undergo more tests. Next up is deciding if he is fit to undergo experimental treatment on his brain condition.
Dr. Hirano, who is from the Columbia University Medical Center, has yet another new experimental form of therapy to try on Charlie. It has never been tested before on humans or animals. But they should get the chance to at least try here. Dr. Hirano is at the forefront of researching Charlie’s rare form of mitochondrial disease and told the High Court last week there was a ‘small but significant’ chance of improvement. That was before the baby had two brain scans, which were his first since April. He underwent an MRI and an EEG. The results were not released, but were pivotal at that meeting day before yesterday.
The doctor from the US and the one from the Vatican faced a GOSH team including Charlie’s consultant pediatric intensivist, consultant pediatric neurologist and an expert in mitochondrial disease. They claim their position on ending Charlie’s life has not changed since last week. They say he has ‘no quality of life and no real prospect of any quality of life’.
The High Court has said it would be kindest to let Charlie ‘slip away’. Except that what they really mean is they would remove his ventilator and let him suffocate. If that didn’t work, they will starve him to death. The Court of Appeals, Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights agreed with the High Court.
Charlie has survived three decisions to withdraw his ventilator, due to appeals by his parents and interventions from Pope Francis and Donald Trump. Then Dr. Hirano and six fellow experts wrote to GOSH offering ‘new evidence’ and the High Court reconvened. The verdict will be decided Monday or Tuesday of next week. I’m still praying for little Charlie. I pray the socialists don’t win and he is allowed to fight for his little life.
