The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, stated at the G20 summit he may not to ratify the Paris climate accord.
Erdogan told German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron: “No offence, but we will not pass it in our parliament as long as the promises made to us are not delivered”.
He said former French president Francois Hollande had promised him that Turkey would be classed as a developing and not an industrialized economy. That meant that Turkey would receive money from a global climate fund rather than have to pay into it.
Some of those promises are financial, and the US was footing the lions share of the bill. It looks like Turkey will most likely not ratify the accord! without the US dollars involved. It will be very hard to make it work out.
Erdogan also suggested some other, unidentified, countries had a “problem” with the agreement and said “they are not renewing their full support”.
It seems that the who accord could be falling apart at the seams.
In the lead-up to Trump’s decision to abandon the Paris deal, a top concern was that U.S. withdrawal could pave the way for other defectors. Russia would be on the top of the list of other countries that might follow suit . Putin has never liked the deal. Much if not most of Russia’s fossil fuel reserves would remain in the ground. A loss of a vast revenue for Russia.
Many already had issues that India and China would not be required to lower their carbon footprint. At the same time, being benefactors of money.
With the US out, and a HUGE chunk of money out because of it, the house of cards has an incredible chance of falling to pieces.
An environment ministry spokesman said that Germany was “mediating” in the dispute with Turkey.
The question remains. Will the industrialized nations stand up and fill in the financial gaps to keep the developing nations in the accord? Are they going to put their money where their mouth is?
Will they see that it is going to cost them a lot more than previously thought? Will they decide that the whole crazy scheme is not worth it?
Donald Trump might have destroyed the Paris Accord entirely. Time will tell.
