East Palestine, Ohio, an eight-year-old boy, was determined that he wanted a cheeseburger from McDonald’s and took to the internet to help him achieve his goal. After watching YouTube videos that instructed him how to drive a car, the boy took his father’s keys and got behind the wheel of the family van, taking his sister along with him for the burger run.
Around 8 p.m one Sunday evening after their father returned home from work before turning in for an early night the children set their plan in motion. Grabbing their piggy bank, the boy and his sister made it the half mile to the nearest McDonalds without incident. Their mother had been watching them but had fallen asleep on the sofa, never imagining that her son would steal the car for a cheeseburger, let alone take his four-year-old sister with him. The very young driver seemed to take his internet lessons to heart and not only obeyed all traffic signs but managed to drive the speed limit the entire way. The police were stunned that the boy managed to cross railway tracks without any problems after watching a few videos. The employees at the McDonalds thought that the parents were playing a practical joke on the staff, thinking they must be in the back of the car when the boy drove through the drive through. No parents were present, however, and the police were called to the scene. A family friend recognized the children and called their grandparents while the kids enjoyed their McDonalds. When the police arrived and questioned the boy, he explained to them through his tears that all he wanted was a cheeseburger.
The children were held until they could be collected by the grandparents and taken home. The boy seems to be aware that what he did was not okay and that he’s very lucky that no one was hurt. At the moment it does not appear that any charges are going to be filled.
